Septic pumping and services in Punta Gorda

Punta Gorda homes beyond the reach of a sewer line still run on a tank and a drain field, and outside the city limits a home near a canal may be on a county pumping schedule. If your system is slow, backing up, or due for service, call the office and a real person answers. We serve Punta Gorda and the rest of Charlotte County from Fort Myers.

Canals and the five year rule

Punta Gorda is a waterfront town, with canals running out to Charlotte Harbor, and that matters for septic. A Punta Gorda mailing address does not always mean a home is inside the city limits, and outside them, in unincorporated Charlotte County, the county code sets a pumping schedule: a standard septic system whose drain field sits within 300 feet of a canal or other surface water has to be pumped at least once every five years by a licensed contractor.

The pump out comes with paperwork, and the timing matters. The county sends a bill when the five year pump out is due. The owner then sends in the contractor’s pump out certification with the operating permit fee, and the health department inspects before it issues a new five year permit. A pump out done in between, for any other reason, does not count toward it. If you have a bill in hand, or your property is on the county’s map of managed systems, mention it when you call so the visit and the certification line up.

Sewer or septic in Punta Gorda

The City of Punta Gorda runs sewer across a service area that reaches past the city limits, and Charlotte County Utilities serves other parts of the county. The county’s sewer master plan aims to bring more homes onto sewer over time, with the health of Charlotte Harbor as a main reason.

Homes beyond those sewer lines are still on septic. For them, the tank and the drain field are the homeowner’s to look after, and the sandy soil and high water table of the wet season make regular pumping worth keeping up with.

What the visit covers

The crew pumps the tank empty and looks over the inlet and outlet while it is open. On a lot near a canal, they also look at the ground over the drain field for soggy or unusually green patches, the usual sign that a field is not keeping up. You get a plain account of what they found and what, if anything, needs to happen next.

Septic in Punta Gorda

Charlotte County's code requires a standard septic system, one that is not an aerobic treatment unit, to be pumped empty at least once every five years by a licensed contractor when its drain field is within 300 feet of a canal or other surface water.

The septic article of the Charlotte County code states that it applies to the unincorporated area of Charlotte County.

Along with that pump out, the Florida Department of Health in Charlotte County requires the homeowner to provide a copy of the septic tank certification and obtain a permit. Charlotte County publishes a map of the managed systems.

The county bills owners of managed systems when the five year pump out is due. The owner then sends the contractor's pump out certification with the operating permit fee, and the health department inspects before issuing a new five year permit. Extra pump outs in between do not take the place of the billed one.

Charlotte County Utilities began a sewer master plan in 2016 and updated it in 2024. One of its aims is to cut the excess nutrients septic systems send toward Charlotte Harbor by treating wastewater at central plants.

The City of Punta Gorda Utilities Department provides water and sewer to customers both inside and outside the city limits, within its utility service area.

Common questions

Does my Punta Gorda septic tank have to be pumped every five years?

It does if the property is in unincorporated Charlotte County, the system is a standard one rather than an aerobic unit, and the drain field is within 300 feet of a canal or other surface water. Charlotte County's map of managed systems is the first place to check. The county bills you when the pump out is due, and an extra pump out in between does not count toward it. If you have the bill, or are not sure, call the office.

Is my Punta Gorda home on septic or sewer?

Many homes in and around the city are on sewer from the City of Punta Gorda or Charlotte County Utilities, and a sewer charge on the bill usually means you are one of them. No sewer charge and a tank lid in the yard means septic.

Do you service aerobic treatment units in Punta Gorda?

Yes. We are certified on Hoot, B.E.S.T., Cajun Aire, Fuji Clean USA, Aqua Aire and Aqua Safe, Norweco, and Jet units, and we offer maintenance contracts on them. Tell the office the make of your unit when you call.

Do I need a permit to replace a septic system in Punta Gorda?

Yes. A new or replacement system is a permitted job in Florida, and the permit is handled through the county office. When we replace a system, we pull the permit and schedule the inspection as part of the work.
